Pirates: Lorch and Shonga suspended for breaching quarantine rules

Orlando Pirates were forced to do battle in their 2019/20 season reopening game against Mamelodi Sundowns at Dobsonville Stadium last night without their two top strikers after the pair broke the Covid-19 health and safety protocols.

Justin Shonga and Thembinkosi Lorch were dropped from the team that faced Sundowns yesterday after it came to light on Sunday that they had breached the teams protocols.

Lorch: I’m still hurt for not going overseas

The players are to appear before a disciplinary council hearing.

Amabhakabhaka confirmed the axing of the pair from the sauai on the club website yesterday, stating that Lorch and Shonga have been excluded from the squad.

“Lorch and Shonga have been excluded from the squad that reported for BSE [bio-safety environment] bubble on [last] Sunday following a breach of the teams protocols.”

The coach [Josef Zinnbauer] also confirmed the suspension of the pair in the post match interview after a goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday night.

“It was a decision from us, the staff, from the coaches. We have to see the next game, we need a lot of players. You know this difficult time, after three days you have a game, we need the whole squad, so all the players have a chance.”
