Match Report: Nigeria 1-1 Tunisia

Nigeria and Tunisia played out an entertaining draw at the Jacques Lemans Arena in Austria.

Nigeria came into the match after losing 1-0 to Algeria four days earlier. Tunisia on the other hand, defeated Sudan 3-0 in the lead up to this match.

Nigeria lineup: Okoye, Omeruo, Balogun, Sanusi, Akpoguma, Ajayi, Iwobi, Chukwueze, Iheanacho, Simon, Musa (c)

Tunisia lineup: Mustapha, Bronn, Meriah, Skhiri, Dreger, Haddadi, Slimane, Mohamed, Rafiaa, Msakni (c), Khazri

Tunisia started the game on the front-foot, although they racked up tons of fouls against the Nigerians.

Hamza Rafia was given a yellow card in the tenth minute, before his teammate Dylan Bronn was also carded for taking down Kelechi Iheanacho.

The fouls did not stop the Super Eagles however, as Iheanacho opened the scoring in the 21st minute. After receiving the ball from Ahmed Musa, the Leicester City striker executed a deft turn-around to beat his marker before perfectly placing his shot in the top-left corner.

On the 30th minute Nigeria had a chance to double their lead after drawing a penalty. Unfortunately for the Super Eagles, Kelechi‘s spot-kick was saved.

Just before half-time Tunisia equalized after a run down the left wing from Hamza Rafia and a successive square ball across the box found an open Mohamed Drager, who smashed the ball into the net.

The second half was quite dull, as the match finished scoreless. There were reasons for excitement however, as two Nigerians made their national debuts in this game.

In the 72nd minute Cyriel Dessers came on for Ahmed Musa. It was a long-time coming for the 25-year-old Genk striker, as he was selected in Gernot Rohr’s squad in March, but the matches were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

22-year-old CSKA Moscow winger Chidera Ejuke also came on to make his debut. He impressed a lot in his cameo.

Dessers and Ejuke were the 51st and 52nd debutants for the Super Eagles under Gernot Rohr – an incredible feat!

Former Germany youth captain Kevin Akpoguma made his debut against Algeria.
