A young Nigerian keeper has made a move from the German fourth division to the Dutch first division, a move that will hopefully boost his chances at playing regularly for club and country.
Maduka Okoye, 20, was born in Germany but declared to play for the Nigerian Super Eagles.
He made his only appearance for the Nigeria senior team in a friendly against Brazil on 13 October 2019.
Okoye played in the Bayer Leverkusen academy from 2012 to 2017, before he moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The 1.97 m (6 ft 6 in) goalkeeper only appeared for Fortuna Düsseldorf II, who play in the fourth division of German football.
With the senior team relegated from the Bundesliga, Okoye jumped ship, moving to Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam on a free transfer today.
“With Maduka, we bring in a great talent, who has a lot of potential. He was in the interest of several clubs from different countries, but he believes he can take the next step at Sparta. We believe he can be of value to this club and are happy that he signed here,” says club member Henk van Stee who described Maduka as a good addition to the club.
