Pitso pleased as Downs treble hopes kept alive

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane was full of praise for his team after they kept their chance of winning the third successive title alive and secured CAF Champions League qualification.

Sundowns thumped relegation-threatened Polokwane City by 3-0 with goals from Anele Ngcongca, Themba Zwane and Keletso Makgalwa sealing the champions league spot for the Brazilians with a top-two spot guaranteeing CAF champions league football in the Absa Premiership.

While the Absa Premiership title could well end in Naturena, Pitso praised his side’s performance as they narrowed the goal difference between them and log leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

“What’s happening on the other side?” Pitso asked SuperSport reporter in the post-match interview.

“They [Chiefs] won,” replied the reporter before Mosimane was his straight forward self.

“It’s a cup final, whoever wins it wins it but we’re not going to give it to anybody [easily],” the former Bafana Bafana coach explained.

“I told you when we lost not when we win, we all have to work for it hey. It’s on an edge, we don’t have it. We had one chance this year, only against Baroka to come up, otherwise, we’ve been chasing.

“But what’s good, to close the 13-points gap, this is what I told the boys. I said ‘to close the 13 points gap, to be where you are now’ for me I give them credit because while other people were resting, where were we?”

Sundowns have been the best Absa Premiership team in the last decade qualifying for six consecutive Champions League campaigns along with four league titles.

The Brazilians have reached two domestic cup finals this season, winning the Telkom Knock Out while the Nedbank Cup final is still to be played.

“In Cairo, Morroco, fighting for Telkom [Knockout] cup to win it, fighting for the Nedbank [cup], I mean we cannot be ungrateful. If we get it, we get it. If we don’t get it, we’ve done our best.

“And by the way what’s more important tonight? [CAF] Champions League spot for the seventh year in a row, that’s more important.

“If you with the league you win it, if we don’t God will tell us what’s gonna happen.”
