Top 5: Ranking the best Africans to play for Real Madrid

5. Geremi

In fifth place is Cameroonian defender Geremi Njitap. Two seasons with Turkish outfit Gençlerbirliği earned him a transfer to Real Madrid in 1999. The next year he was nominated for the Ballon d’Or. His first goal for the club interestingly came against Raja Casablanca in the 2000 Club World Cup.

In his first two seasons with the club, Geremi made 30 appearances in all competitions each season. Seeking more regular football after only making nine La Liga appearances in the 2001/02 season, Geremi moved to Middlesbrough for the 2002/03 season on loan.

An impressive FIFA Confederations Cup campaign with Cameroon was the main factor in Chelsea signing him for £6.9 million in July 2003, where he went on to have a successful stint under Jose Mourinho with the Blues.
