Top 5: Ranking the best Africans to play for Real Madrid

3. Mahamadou Diarra

Malian central-midfielder Mahamadou Diarra has played more times for Real Madrid than any other player on this list.

After winning four straight Ligue 1 titles with Lyon, Diarra was wanted by Europe’s best clubs in the summer of 2006. Despite courting from Manchester United, Real Madrid were able to secure their new number 6 for €26 million. Diarra’s defensive presence in the midfield was a key factor to Real Madrid’s back-to-back La Liga title wins in 2007 & 2008.

Unfortunately, Diarra suffered a devastating knee injury in October 2008 while playing an international fixture for Mali against Chad. Despite returning from the injury a month later, it was aggravated and Diarra was ruled out for the rest of the season. In his absence, Real Madrid replaced him with Lassana Diarra.
