Yanga look to challenge Simba with Ibenge – report

Tanzanian football has been crazy, to say the least, over the past few weeks.

Simba won the treble. Yanga’s coach Luc Eymael was fired for racist remarks. Simba then proceded to sign Yanga’s star player Bernard Morrison before their CEO Senzo Mbatha resigned shortly after the controversial the transfer. Before we could fully report on the story, Mbatha joined Yanga to become their new CEO.

Since then Simba has taken an ambitious approach to the transfer market, signing Charles Ilamfia, Joash Onyango, David Kameta, Larry Bwalya, Chrispine Mugalu and Ibrahim Ame to join Morrison.

They have also been linked to Nigerian striker Junior Lokosa.

It seemed that Simba were looking to overhaul their coaching staff as well after the Dar es Salaam club was linked with Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane and legendary Congolese tactician Florent Ibenge.

Yanga, however, are looking to snatch two-time Linafoot champion Ibenge away from Simba.

The AS Vita coach, who led the Democratic Republic of Congo to third place at AFCON 2015, was pictured meeting with Yanga executives in Kinshasa on Sunday.

Yanga have been in the search for a new coach following the sacking of Eymael, and a move for Ibenge would signal that the club has set their sets high to restore the order of Tanzania football.

Yanga’s Director of Communications Hassan Bumbuli refused to deny the rumours, if anything, he created more suspense when he said that fresh news would be announced today (remarks made on Sunday).

“Heaven agrees. And now? Tomorrow is Monday, turn on the signal,” he said as per FootDRC.

Steel Company GSM has been bankrolling the record 27-time league champions fell into financial turmoil and they recently reached an agreement with the Spanish La Liga in a historic partnership could propel Yanga to new heights.

Ibenge has been at AS Vita for eight years and resigned from his role as the DR Congo national team head coach after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations but it’s understood that a lucrative offer could lure him to East Africa.

The Gambia assistant coach and former number of Eymael, Riedoh Berdien has been in charge of training over the past two weeks and AFHQ understands he could be retained within the new technical staff for the 2020/21 campaign.
